KB0020 - I keep getting prompted for my credentials (username/password) when I click on a OnePlaceMail folder in Outlook

When selecting a SharePoint folder in Outlook (under My OnePlaceMail) you are prompted for credentials to access SharePoint even though you access SharePoint under the credentials you are currently logged into Windows as.

Issue

When selecting a SharePoint folder in Outlook (under My OnePlaceMail) you are prompted for credentials to access SharePoint even though you access SharePoint under the credentials you are currently logged into Windows as.

When you access the same SharePoint library through a web browser the Web Content Zone is Internet or Restricted.

Reason

OnePlaceMail utilises Windows Integrated security by default to automatically authenticate the current user with SharePoint servers when communicating with SharePoint. This allows the user to to seemlessly drag and drop emails from Outlook to SharePoint and view SharePoint content without entering usernames and passwords.

In order for OnePlaceMail to automatically pass your Windows user credentials to the SharePoint server, the SharePoint site must be added to either your Local Intranet Zone or the Trusted Sites Zone in Internet Explorer.

Solution

Follow this procedure for adding a SharePoint site to the Trusted Sites Zone:

  • Start Internet Explorer and open your SharePoint site
  • Double click on the web content zone icon (located in the bottom right of your browser window)

  • Click the Trusted Sites logo and then click the Sites… button

  • Enter the URL of your SharePoint server and click the Add button. If you are adding a server that is using the http protocol (and not SSL) then uncheck the Require server verification (https) for all sites in this zon

  • Click OK
  • The web content zone icon should now identify the site as being in the Trusted Zone

  • You should now be able to close all open Internet Explorer windows, and reopen the SharePoint in a new Internet Explorer window. You will no longer be prompted for a password and your current windows credentials will be passed across to the SharePoint server. OnePlaceMail will now allow you to seemlessly drag and drop without prompting for usernames and passwords, or encountering unauthorised access errors.
